PENELOPE CRUZ

I started work in OLE!. One of our first models was Penelope Cruz. She was fourteen-years-old. Very bright and lively. She earned a lot of money at the time because casting that she went for an ad spot (the best paid), spot that she got. But she always wanted to be an actress. She was offered the starring part of a half-porno film "The ages of Lulú" by Bigas Luna. She needed her parents' permission because she was under-age. The whole family came to see us (mother, father, brother, sister and Penelope). I spoke to them and gave them my opinion. I told Penelope that I was sure that she would become a great actress but that, if I was her mother, I wouldn't sign because I didn't think this particular part was suitable for her as she would be forever type-cast and would have to undress in every other film. They listened to me and didn't sign. Afterwards she, of course, did "Ham, Ham" where she showed quite a bit of her beautiful anatomy but she was older then. However, she was intelligent enough to say that from that film on she would not undress in any other one and that's been the way so far. Good for her! This past summer she and her sister came to Ibiza to promote their designs for "Mango". I went to see her because I hadn't seen her for years. Her sister recognized me but Penelope took a while to do so and when she did, her entourage swept her away, I don't know where... (it will continue)

Me fuí a "OLE!" (Continuará)

After two years in Danis, my daughter Fatima called me to go and work for them (her husband was a partner with Georgio Aresu in "Biba" Modelling Agency) I said to her: "What am I going to do in a modelling agency?" She said: "Mommy with your english and maternal attitude you would be great with our models". I thought about it. I left Danis. I became a "booker" in Biba. I was surrounded by beauties, it's true, but the work wasn't very challenging, to say the least. I was always on the phone with photographers to see our models, and with models to go and see the photographers. Quite a routine. Georgio Aresu, the major partner had to go to Italy. He left me in charge of the celebrities, Bertin Osborne, Sylvia de Habsburgo, Bibi Andersen, José Banderas. I was in charge of their contracts and advertising spots. But problems arose between the partners (Aresu, my son-in-law and another one). My son-in-law and the other one decided to start their own modelling agency "OLE!". Georgio asked me to stay with him but I wasn't going to leave my daughter on her own. I went with them to "OLE!". (It will continue)

PUENTE SOBRE AGUAS TURBULENTAS - BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER

Those years in Madrid were bitter-sweet. I was always very close to my step-children and to Fernando's family who have always been MY family, for the past forty years, because they were my greatest support in the difficult times when I threw society overboard in order to live with him. We always spent all the family gatherings together (birthdays, Christmas). Until one Christmas, my step-son Pancho didn't appear. I told Fernando that it wasn't normal that Pancho didn't show up or phoned us. That we had to look for him. Since Pancho had decided to go to Holland, Fernando said that surely he was there and that he would contact us on his return. As it happened, Pancho died in a car accident on that trip. He was 28 years-old. It was a great shock for all the family as Pancho was such a lovable character, he had a great sense of humour, very original and a wonderful human being. He wanted to be a script-writer and I'm sure he would've had great success because he was very imaginative. A few years later my adored father also died. Sad years of painful losses. Buy my step-daughters are still there, Fatima and Bambi (Sofia) who, from now on, I will no longer call them "step-daughters" because I hate the term. For me they're my daughters even though I didn't give them birth and, of course, I have my daughter.

TED BATES

Working in an advertising agency, is the closest thing to being in a nut house. Meetings at all hours, deadlines, coffee overdoses, nerves, stress and great laughs. My experience in Ted Bates was very gratifying, although, afterwards I changed to Danis, Benton & Bowles where I was better paid and was also within walking distance from my house. In those years (80's) I earned a mint! A salary that nowadays young persons don't earn, that's why I say we need to make a revolution.... In advertising I was a muse of certain ads. "Colgate" for example. The Creative Director was fascinated with my teeth and I inspired him with some of their ads. I continued with my theatrical "career". I belonged to "Madrid Players" where I participated in, mostly, Shakespearean plays. In "Danis" I was in charge of a small military magazine account. I often spoke with the editor, a high military officer to check when and what we would advertise in the magazine. I flipped with the articles that came out in that magazine! For example, there are planes that can read a newspaper on the ground at night... and this happened in the 80's!!!! (It will continue).

CORRECCION - CORRECTION

En mi último post, me he equivocado. Al final quiero decir : "¡ ETA KANPORA!" ("FUERA ETA"). Mi euskera está un poco (bastante) oxidado. Lo siento.

In my previous post, I made a mistake. At the end I meant to say: "¡ETA KANPORA!" (ETA OUT). I'm afraid my Basque is a bit (?) rusty. Sorrry.

CORRECCION - CORRECTION

ETA

¡ETA AURRERA! (¡FUERA ETA!).

I'm making a small parenthesis in the story of my life in order to comment the latest killing by that miserable gang. If I have any "abertzale - Basque patriot" reading this (i.e. if they have the intelligence required and know how to read...), I would like to tell him/her that the way of cold-blooded murders, cruel and heartless of innocent hard-working citizens, is not the way to "liberate" Euskadi (Basque country). As a matter of fact Euskadi doesn't need to be "liberated" because it's not imprisoned by anything or anyone. The only thing they achieve is a total rejection of most of the Basque citizens, not to mention the rest of Spain. Euskadi has a very ample autonomy whereby the life of its citizens can be compared, almost, to Sweden in regards to social welfare, etc. They live very well. Therefore, we don't need "country-savers" of that bloody sort. ¡ETA AURRERA! (¡ETA OUT!).

VUELTA A ESPAÑA - RETURN TO SPAIN

During all the years that we lived in Toronto, every summer we came back to Spain on holidays (thanks to the income-tax back-payments that I received). My daughter stayed with her father, brother and sisters. My colleague and I went to Ibiza or San Lucar de Barrameda where his parents had a house. But the time arrived when my daughter had a very solid base in English and we both missed, I my step-children, and she her brother and sisters, and her father. We decided to return. My colleague stayed in Canada. We settled in Madrid where Fernando and the "kids" (they were grown-ups by then....) lived. As it happened, Fernando had been waiting for me all that time and he thought that I would move in with him right away. I said no. Since I was twenty-one I had been living with someone. I wanted, needed, to live alone. I also added that I was sure that he would, sooner or later, meet someone and I would end up all by myself (it happens, no matter how old a man is, he always seems to find someone but we, women, once you pass a certain age, we're invisible and there is nothing to do...). We moved to Cmte. Zorita, a street that was surrounded by "Mercedes", Infanta Mercedes Street, Queen Mercedes Avenue, the Church of Our Lady María de las Mercedes... I was predestined... I looked for work. I found it in "Ted Bates" a multinational American advertising agency. My first job in the fascinating world of advertising...

LA VIDA CONTINUA - LIFE CONTINUES

I continued with my very busy life. What with my theatre group, the Spanish Tourist Office, meetings of all the minority groups of Toronto, large dinners (we were always about ten people). I cooked. The rest washed the dishes. When my "star" part arrived as the mother of the groom in Lorca's "Blood Wedding". Until then we had always acted in University theatres, but this time we acted in a commercial Toronto theatre. The three functions were sold-out. The first day, people laughed because they remembered me from the previous play where I had a very funny part as Dña. Socorro in "Cyanide, alone or with milk?". I said to myself: "Are they going to laugh? No way..." I imposed myself on the stage (I felt the eroticism of power). No sound was heard. Absolute silence. While I went on talking about the land shares and my son's fiancée who had run away with another one... the bitch... the theatre was in complete silence. At the end of the first day, an Argentinian woman came up to me to congratulate me because I had played the part of the mother better than the great "Xirgú" who she had seen in Buenos Aires in the original play. It was a great compliment, to say the least. We had such a great success that we were offered to act in different universities all over the country. However, I had decided to return to Spain.

Our Spanish National Tourist Office in Toronto was the only one in Canada. We received letters asking for information from all over the country. Specially many schools asking for posters. When we received letters from schools in the Yukon, I sent them all the sunny posters that we had in order to brighten their classrooms. I remember a young Spanish girl, studying in British Columbia, who wrote to us asking for posters because they were going to have a multicultural school party. I sent her so many things! Each of all the posters we had, flags, pamphlets, everything. Once we also received a call from someone in the States asking for info. I, kindly, told him that we didn't send information to the States because we had five Tourist Offices there and ours was only for Canada. He begged me to send him the info because we advised better.... Anyway, my work experience, I must say, was very gratifying. But we also received complaints. Canadians who had been gipped. Seville, such a beautiful city, was the champion. We received letters from Canadians who had had all their belongings stolen by different gipping methods like the mustard scam. Someone went up to them, spilled some mustard on their clothes and, when others went to clean it, they cleaned everything they had! Purse-pulling, etc. All the complaints arrived at our office. So, I asked myself: "What does that have to do with our Spanish National Tourist Office?!" From then on, I decided that when people came for information, I would also warn them of all the possible scams they were exposed to. End of the complaints.
