EXCURSIONES (4) - EXCURSIONS (4)

Me quedé a cuadros.

SORRY, NO ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOR THIS POST BECAUSE IT'S VERY LOCAL INFORMATION (AND I DON'T KNOW IF IT WILL BE PUBLISHED).

EXCURSIONES (3) - EXCURSIONS (3)

Let's see if today I'm luckier in publishing my post. As I was saying, in the Fall, the Spanish retired used to come to Ibiza (I'm still in the seventies). In those years we used to have groups that came from Palma de Mallorca for a one-day island tour. We used to pick them up at the airport and then return them at the end of the tour. In one of these tours, I will never forget the lady from Jaén. I went to pick them up at the airport, among the group that came, an older woman stood out. She was dressed in black, with her wite hair braided into a bun at the back and with black slippers in her feet. What suprised me the most was that she came in slippers! I imagined that this lady came from difficult hard-working days in a "cortijo" (Andalusian ranch) in Jaén and that, now in her old age, her children had invited her to this trip. What a woman! She was incredible. During the whole excursion she was keen, her antennaes wide open to all the information that she was receiving, enthused. I thought, what a wonderful, intelligent woman that due to her circumstances had never had the chance to study. She absorbed everything like a sponge, anxious to know, to learn.
As I say, an incredible woman. When I took them to the airport the woman from Jaén gave me a huge hug and told me that she had never enjoyed anything more in her life. What a great compliment! She was lovable. I will never forget her.

EXCURSIONES (2) - EXCURSIONS (2)

Ultimamente he tenido unas excursiones muy raras.

I wrote this post earlier but it got lost in the cybersphere... I hope it doesn't come out twice now.
As you know, I'm a tour guide in Ibiza. Lately, I've had some strange tours... One day I took a Catalan Coaching company, some top executives from a multinational company and a film crew. We were supposed to do half an island tour but we ended up just going for lunch at a restaurant in Cala San Vicente (a beautiful beach in the north of the island)--because we left late from the hotel and we only had time to go to lunch-- and then to Portinatx (also in the north) to another restaurant for a brainstorming meeting. I waited for them for two and a half hours... All in all, we just went to lunch, the meeting, and back to the hotel. I was with them from 1:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m.
Another day I went as a "package" with a Czech group. As there are no official guides who speak Czech on the island I went with someone who did speak it as, I say, a package in order to give it a more official aura... I didn't say a word during the whole island tour but what surprised me the most was that around 12:00 noon, everyone took out bread, salamy, sausages, knives and drinks and started eating! In the bus! Very strange these Czechs...
Today I walked up to Dalt Vila (the high town of Ibiza city) with a very friendly folk Portuguese group from Miranda de Duero. It was a nasty rainy day. When we got to the top they all started singing in one of the bastions, thereby attracting all the tourists that were there at the time. They didn't care, they kept singing in the rain!

IRINA

Siento defraudaros.

Various of my dear bloggers are overly excited with a very beautiful model whose picture they see in all the bus stops. I don't want to let anyone down but I'm going to tell you an anecdote of my experience as a booker in "OLE!" Modelling Agency. Often we booked models from the book other modelling agencies sent us. Once we received one from an agency in Finland with incredible pictures. A gorgeous and very photogenic girl. We booked her. The day she arrived WE WERE DUMBFOUNDED. We couldn't believe that the insignificant, mousy-looking woman we had in front of us was the beauty that we had seen in her book! Moral of the story: not everything that shines is gold and don't trust photographic images! Sorry to disappoint you.

DISCRIMINACION - DISCRIMINATION

Yo no hablaba alemán.

In the fifties in Toronto there were a lot of "DP's" (displaced persons)--a very pejorative term in those years--stateless persons who had arrived from a devastated Europe after the Second World War. Mostly Jews who had survived the concentration camps; that's another insult children used to shower me with..., but that's not what I want to write about. The truth is I had never experienced open discrimination in Canada, nor in England, nor in Paris except in... Germany. Fernando and I spent nine months in Düsseldorf because of his job in a multinational American company that went bankrupt. Our daughter was six-months old. I didn't speak German. One day I went to a drugstore to buy a little pot of garden vegetables (garten gemüsse). I told the pharmacist "ein flasche of garten gemüsse" he dryly replied "nicht fürstein" (I don't understand). I insisted "ein flasche of garten gemüsse für baby, für kinder". Once again he answered--this time with a killing look--"nicht fürstein". A man entered the pharmacy and listened to our verbal exchange. This kind man said to the pharmacist "ein flasche garten gemüsse für baby" then the bastard pharmacist said "Ahhh, ein garten gemüuuuuse". That was one experience. Another time, I went to "Kaufhof", large department store, a man was standing behind an information desk full of little flags from different countries. I spoke to him in English apologizing for not speaking German, he also very dryly answered "keine English" (I don't speak English), I tried with French, once again "keine Franzusish" my last bet was Spanish. There he exploded. He growled at me full of hatred "KEINE ENGLISH, KEINE FRANZUSISH, KEIN SPANIEN--DEUTSCH!!!" Other things happened to me but they didn't affect me, on the contrary, I found them amusing since I was bit worldly at the time but I often thought about the poor Spanish immigrants coming from small villages in Spain and having to put up with that. Very unfair.

EMIGRACION - EMIGRATION

Go back where you came from!"

The first post that I wrote in my blog was my emigration experience being the child of immigrants in Canada. Now, that everyone in Europe is so worried about it, I thought it would be a good idea to refresh memories. Being an immigrant's child is worse than being an exile, because children don't choose to go to a new country. They're taken there. One of the worst anguish and pain that a human being can suffer is homesickness. It's terrible. It gnaws at your soul. I suffered it during my first two years in Canada because I missed my grandmother, my nanny, my aunts and uncles, my cousins, my dogs, my countryside, my trees. However, as we say in Spanish, there's always something good that comes from something bad, and that horrible grief built a shield that all other sorrows that have come about in my life, I've simply sorted them out, blocked them or let them slip by altogether. Our emigration wasn't for economic reasons (actually, we lived far better in the Basque Country) but, I imagine, it was political. My father didn't want to live under Franco. My first months at school--I hadn't heard English in my life and there was no other Spanish-speaking person around--were horrendous. Children, as always, can be cruel and when they spat at me "go back where you came from!" I used to turn all colours! red with fury I wanted to tell them that if I could I would but the words weren't there to express myself... (I will continue tomorrow).

NIAGARA

My dears, at the beginning of my blog adventure I wrote about this, but it disappeared in the cybersphere, so I'll repeat it.

After a few years in Toronto, my father bought a car--a Morris-Oxford. The first trip we took was to Niagara Falls. Beautiful, grandiose, magnificent. In those years the first black person I had ever seen was when we went to see the Falls from the American side and we went on to Buffalo, N.Y.--full of blacks! What a difference from the Canadian side where you didn't see ONE coloured person. In those years (fifties) Canada was a very WASPish society. I think the first black person I saw in Toronto was in the sixties. Anyway, as I was saying, we saw the Falls from the American side. My father was so enthused with the Falls that for the next TWO years we went to see them almost every weekend! I saw them from above, from below with the yellow raincoats, from the boat underneath with the black raincoats, from the Spanish Rail (named after one of my relatives, an engineer who built it) in front, so, least of falling over them (which, of course, I wouldn't be writing about them now...) I knew the Falls inside out! I was fed up with the Falls! I swore to myself NEVER to go back. Until now I've kept my promise.

METIS

Hoy he conocido a una de mis bloggers, Metis. Encantadora.

Today I met one of my bloggers, Metis. Very charming. We had lunch together at the "Abadia" Restaurant, in Abad & La Sierra Street in Ibiza city, owned by my very good friends, Cristina Ereñú (great painter) and her ex-husband, Eduardo Orduña (originally from Valladolid). It's been a great pleasure meeting her. We spoke about everything mundane and divine under the sun. I spent a marvellous hour and a half and we ate very well: a delicious gazpacho and "guisat de peix" (fish stew). We agreed to meet again. It's such a great pleasure to meet my bloggers!

EPOCA COLEGIALA - SCHOOL DAYS

When I was in high school in St. Joseph's College School in Toronto, I signed up for every extracurricular activity that existed; I was member of the choir, of the student council, the theatre group and whatever else came up. One day the Brothers from De La Salle came to our school to choose the girls that would perform in the musical "Oklahoma!" that they were going to set up. I, of course, was there in the first row for the musical trials. Brother Walter, gave me the first note of "Oklahoma!" in the piano. My voice wavered up and down on that first "Ooooo". He repeated and repeated and I couldn't get it! Until I told him that I didn't know WHAT note he was giving me. They chose me anyway (I was part of the choir). We had great success! The director had been a famous theatre director in London and our play turned out quite professional as if we were in Broadway!! We even received great reviews from the local, serious, newspapers. The following year I was an Indian in "Annie Get Your Gun" another musical. During the whole play, I simply had to stand at one side of the stage with my arms folded, like a statue. The only word I said was "bracelets" and that was when I took a coil from a mattress and someone asked me what it was...

I'm listening to the great Dulce Pontes and her fado "Tear" which has inspired me to translate it for you:

"Full of pain, full of pain, I fall asleep
and full of more pain, full of more pain, I wake up.
In my chest I no longer have a heart, nor the feeling, the feeling of loving you so,
but the pain inside, the despairing pain and the punishment of loving you so;
I don't love you, I tell myself that I don't love you, but at night I dream of you.
If one day, considering I'm going to die, in my despair I have to see...

I spread my shawl on the ground, I spread my shawl on the ground and I let myself
dreaming fall asleep...
If I knew, if I knew that by dying, you would cry for me, you would cry for me,
For just one tear, one of your tears, what happiness it would be to let myself be killed.
For just one tear, one of your tears, what happiness it would be to let myself be killed"

-- A BIT "GLOOMY" BUT, LET'S NOT FORGET, IT'S A FADO --

Orson Welles made a film called "Fake" basically about these two characters--Elmyr and Irving.
As I was saying, Elmyr got away with it and continued copying the great masters (even selling them to some of the best museums in the world, like the Modern Art Museum of New York, where the "experts" said they were original...) because these islands, at the time of Franco, were a bit forgotten (actually, it was an oasis of liberty). However, Elmyr's luck changed when democracy arrived in Spain, because not only France wanted to extradite him, because of all his forgeries, but the Mafia was after him also... I knew Elmyr very well because he came almost every evening to "La Familia" always with his young American friend, Mark. Elmyr had a very extroverted personality, good conversationalist and a wonderful sense of humour. He always had a smile on his face; but, one evening, he came and was sad-looking, pale, silent, I couldn't even ask him what was wrong. I asked Mark: "What's wrong with Elmyr??" Mark said: "He's destroyed, utterly, destroyed..." I asked him why and he told me: "He found his favourite dog hanged from a fig tree in front of his house with a note saying HE was next". Two days after that fateful question, the extradition to France came through, he was going to be sent to jail. He decided to stay here and committed suicide and is buried in the island. If you see "Fake" you'll notice that is mostly about these two characters and now you know the ending, because it doesn't come out in the film. Speaking about films, there is a recent picture, "Hoax", where Richard Gere plays the part of Clifford Irving.

Elmyr de Hory is considered to be the greatest art forger of the Twentieth Century. He was a Hungarian ex-patriate who, after the Second World War, emigrated to the States and lived as an illegal alien selling his paintings for very little money--$10-$15--until he started copying the French Impressionists--Matisse, Renoir, Monet Manet (also lots of Picassos and Modiglianis)--those he sold for thousands of dollars. In 1959 he moved to Ibiza. In those years, the American writer Clifford Irving and his Swiss-German wife, Edith, also lived on the island. They met, Clifford found Elmyr an interesting character so he wrote a biography of him entitled "Fake". Afterwards, Clifford decided to write a biography of Howard Hughes--the very excentric American multimillionaire who had never given his permission for anyone to write his biography (recently Leonardo di Caprio played his part in "The Aviator")--but since, in the early seventies, Hughes was quite an older man living inside a glass bubble in a hotel (he was afraid of germs, etc.)--Clifford thought that he wouldn't find out so, apparently, Elmyr forged Hughes' signature giving him permission to go ahead. He wrote it, published it, and began to sell like hotcakes when Howard Hughes came out of his glass bubble and said: "NO, I didn't give my permission!". It was a great scandal, it came out in all the Papers, even the covers of "Time" and "Newsweek". Off to jail went Clifford and his wife, but Elmyr got away with it but not for very long... (it will continue tomorrow).

MICHAEL E.

Me respetaba.

My great love when I was eighteen was a Canadian medical student, Michael E., who worked as a whale hunter in the north of Canada in the summer. We used to go out together and once when he accompanied me to the door and was expecting the typical "good-night kiss" I kissed him. He realized that I didn't know how to kiss, but he kept asking me out. Although he didn't try it again. He respected me. I was crazy about him! but unable to let him know that I wanted him to rape! me (in a decent way). He kept respecting me. As a matter of fact he always called me his "virhensiita" (the only one he knew...). We were very good friends and still are. We often spent afternoons together just talking in his room at his students' residence. They were allowed female company but no one could stay after 20:00. One evening that we overstayed our time limit just TALKING, we had to escape, like fugitives, through a window and slide down a maple tree that, luckily, was right by the window . Quite an adventure! While Michael went out with me in a platonic way, he had another girl friend with whom he slept (fucked). His buddies at the residence whenever he was with her they would put the famous song of West Side Story "MARIA, I just met a girl named MARIA..." because, in Canada, everyone knew me as Maria...

"FIN" - "THE END"

It's not the end of my blog. It's the end of Agustín and Avelino. After that year in Paris, Avelino went to Perú. I discovered a year afterward, through his cousins, that he was happily married to a Swiss woman. I returned to Canada that year. Agustín appeared in Toronto. He also asked me to marry him once he found out that I had rejected Avelino. Again, I said I wasn't prepared for marriage and that I loved him as a friend. He was more proud than Avelino and he took my rejection as personnal insult. He disappeared. I never heard or saw him again.
