Estaba medio helado y casi no podía moverse.

TRANSPORTATION UNDER ICY WEATHER

The truck left Candera at night and stopped in Marmolejo where Miguel slept in the Spa's hotel.  José, the chauffeur, went back to Candera on a charcoal driver's cart and Miguel, with a new driver, continued the trip to Seville at 04:00 a.m.  In the cabin travelled the driver, Miguel, and  the Marmolejo hotel owner's brother-in-law, who they didn't have any other choice but to admit.  As soon as the lorry's engine started, another individual, who said he was related to José, pleaded to be taken with them as he had to be in Seville that same afternoon.

--Get on the back--Miguel said--.  Here, as you can see, there's no room.

The individual climbed up on the back and sat, as well as he could, between the mineral sacks.  After they had driven thirty/forty kilometres, some hurrying and desperate knocks were heard on the cabin's roof.  The driver stopped and Miguel went down to see what was happening.

It was a freezing morning.  Frost covered the fields and, dangerously, whitened the olive groves.  The individual who was installed among the wolfram sacks, stuttering and livid, frozen to death, begged them to take him out of there.  He was partly frozen and could hardly move.  They brought him down and took him to a nearby tavern where they gave him a strong liqueur in order to revive him.  Afterwards, to warm him up, they wrapped him in a blanket they took out of the tool box, and put the lamb-skin rug that the driver had at his feet, over him.  And there he stayed, next to the chimney, while the tavern owner heated up some broth and his wife cooked him some corn porridge with pork sausage.

The truck continued its trip to Seville, but Miguel, although they had left the man quite recovered, was still worried.  Had he caught pneumonia?  While the driver, inexplicably, thought it all very funny and started laughing his head off.  During the whole trip, whenever he thought about the half-frozen traveller, he laughed until tears filled his eyes.

The warehouse in Seville, of only one plant, was enormous.  Miguel thought that it could have been a hangar  for airplanes at the dawn of aviation, but no one who was there could confirm the certainty of the origin of the place.

The sacks formed mountains that reached the roof's skylights.  Little or no difference was made when they added those coming from Candera.

--Probably, not one sack that's here will come out of the warehouse--said one of the men in charge, to Miguel--.  The English don't need wolfram, but they do want to prevent the Germans from buying it, since they're in dire need of this mineral for their armament.

When Miguel returned to Candera, the women were still scrubbing the house.  There was no alternative but to stay in the office where a brazier of hot coals warmed up the room.  The rest of the house, with the windows open in order to evaporate the humidity due to all the cleaning, was uninhabitable.

BESOTES PRECIOSA Y BUENA SEMANA!

Besotes, M.

PEDRO, pero ¿no fue ferroviario? Besotes, M.
