No habría podido decir qué.

THE "LITTLE BLACKSMITH'S" HOUR (3)

One of the guards, absent-mindedly, looked out the window while he warmed himself.  When, all of a sudden, he saw between the trees, four men staggering towards the "cortijo".  They seemed very tired.  Through the blankets that covered them up to their heads, the barrels of their shotguns stood out.  The guard made a sign to his colleague who cautiously came to the window.  They, quietly, opened it slightly.  They looked at eachother and prepared their arms, but they were too nervous and, instead of waiting until the outlaws were closer, shot them.  The bandits quickly escaped through the oak forest.  However, one of them had been wounded judging by the drops of blood that trailed behind.

Three of the four that escaped, managed to cross the Yegua river before nightfall and were already hidden in the Jaén mountains.  The "Little Blacksmith", with a wounded foot, couldn't follow them so he stayed at the bottom of the hill.  His blanket was entangled in the bramble bushes.  Soon he realized that all his exits were closed.  A goat shepherd that had helped him on different occasions, told him that he was closely surrounded.

He realized that where he was, wasn't a good spot because he could be seen from above.  Dragging his wounded foot, he climbed up the sharp hill, looking for a hiding place.  He went through the thickets, trying not to make noise, until he found a sort of arcade formed by three huge stones.  He laid down, sweating and completely exhausted.  He had been running in that ruggedness for many hours and, although the wound didn't seem to be too severe, it was very painful.

He leaned the loaded shotgun against a rock, next to him; his hand on the pistol.  The handle of a mountain knife appeared under his belt.  Soon night fell.  A while after, despite the anguish and freezing cold, he managed to doze off and fall asleep.  All of a sudden, something awoke him.  He couldn't specify what.  He stood up, startled, grabbed the shotgun and paid attention; he held his breath in order to hear better.

Nothing..., silence.  Later, an extremely sad wolf's cry was heard in the distance.  From his hiding place, looking up through the thickets, brambles and leaves, he could see the moon's clear circle appearing between the rips of a bleak, damp cloud.  The "Little Blacksmith" standing still, like a statue, his finger on the trigger, listened.  Some time passed.  The moon disappeared.  A little while after, the reddish dawn announced a new day.  He was still alert, listening, with his shotgun by his side.  Through the leaves he saw the day clearing.  His heart stopped when he heard far away voices.  He reassured his finger on the trigger and continued listening.  The voices were now closer.

---Bring the dog!--he heard someone say.

He could hear them walking through the thickets.  They whistled and a dog's bark was heard.  Juan Antonio's heart pounded fast.  The barks were nearer.  It was the end!

Before being trapped in the cave like a rat, he made a decision.  He went to the bottom of the rock and managed to crawl out through a hole up among the hills.  Once in the countryside,  limping, he started to run desperately downhill towards the hollow.

--There he goes!--they shouted.

Soon the German Shepherd chased him, barking furiously.  When the dog was about to attack him, the fugitive stopped, turned towards the animal and shot him viciously.  The animal fell backwards with his legs in the air, howling wildly.  The "Little Blacksmith" in his frenzy and exasperated madness, took out the knife from his belt and thrust it through its throat.  (It will continue)
